What Is A Thimble
Thimbles are small, hard pitted cups that ware worn for protection on fingers that push needles during sewing. Those with a closed top (like this one here) are used by dressmakers but special thimbles with openings either end are used by tailors, allowing them to manipulate the cloth more easily as they work it. Another similar device is the Finger guard which differs from tailors’ thimbles in that they often have a top and an opening on one side. Some guards are simply shields attached to rings to keep them in place. The name comes from the Old English word for thumb.
